چکیده

We have synthesized calcium phosphate-based, strontium (Sr) containing, porous ceramic granules for use as bone graft substitutes. The granules with a particle size between 1 and 2 mm and a (macro)-pore size around 200–500μm were mixed with a fibrin sealant to form a moldable composite material. The starting material with Sr contents between 0 and 100% Sr were precipitated from Ca/Sr solutions with appropriate Ca/Sr ratios, and ammonium phosphate solution using a published protocol with slight variations. A selection of the resulting powders was calcined, milled, mixed with urea as porogen and compacted into disks. These disks were fractured to result in raw granules, which were then sintered at high temperature. In preparation for in vivo implantation, the granules were mixed with fibrin sealant (ArtissTM, Baxter) to create a cohesive, moldable composite material that can be used as a bone graft substitute.

Experimental posterolateral spinal fusion with porous ceramics and mesenchymal stem cells.

Alternatives to autogenous bone graft for spinal fusion have been investigated for many years. It has been shown that osteoconductive materials alone do not give a rate of fusion which is comparable to that of autogenous bone graft. We analysed the effectiveness of porous ceramic loaded with cultured mesenchymal stem cells as a new graft material for spinal fusion in an animal model. Posterolat...

The Effect on Implant Fixation of Soaking Tricalcium Phosphate Granules in Bisphosphonate

The use of bone grafting is a well-established way to enhance initial implant fixation in situations with reduced bone stock. Ceramic bone substitutes are inferior alternatives to autogenous or allogeneic bone graft. Improvement of bone graft substitutes is needed. We investigated whether biomechanical implant fixation and osseointegration of experimental implant grafted with β-TCP granules (Co...

Improving the mechanical and bioactivity of hydroxyapatite porous scaffold ceramic with diopside/forstrite ceramic coating

Objective(s): Scaffolds are considered as biological substitutes in bone defects which improve and accelerate the healing process of surrounding tissue. In recent years a major challenge in biomaterials is to produce porous materials with properties similar to bone tissue. In this study, the natural bioactive hydroxyapatite scaffolds with nano Diopside /Forstrite coating was successfully synthe...

Osteogenicity of biphasic calcium phosphate ceramics and bone autograft in a goat model.

The aim of this work was to compare the osteogenicity of calcium phosphate ceramic granules with autologous bone graft in ectopic and orthotopic sites. Biphasic calcium phosphate (BCP) granules composed of hydroxyapatite (HA) and beta-tricalcium phosphate (beta-TCP) in a 60/40 ratio were sintered at 1050, 1125 and 1200 degrees C, producing different microporosities. Either BCP ceramic granules ...

Instrumented Lumbar Corpectomy and Spinal Reconstruction Comparing rhBMP-2/Compression-Resistant Matrix, rhBMP-2/Absorbable Collagen Sponge/Ceramic Granules Mixture, and Autograft in Two Different Devices: A Study in Sheep.

STUDY DESIGN Fusion success with rhBMP-2 and autograft in titanium or PEEK corpectomy devices was evaluated in a sheep lumbar corpectomy model. The 6 treatment groups included titanium mesh or PEEK corpectomy devices filled with rhBMP-2 on a compression-resistant matrix (CRM) carrier; rhBMP-2 in a morselized absorbable collagen sponge (ACS) carrier combined with resorbable ceramic granules; and...
